Hume Valley School Victorian School Building Authority

Building brighter futures, where every student thrives.

Established in 1968, Hume Valley School is a dual-campus specialist school providing educational programs for students aged 5 to 18 with mild intellectual disabilities. With a rich history and cultural diversity, the school’s expansion supports the ongoing education of children with autism, communication disorders, sensory impairments, and health challenges.

Alchemy was engaged to deliver the secondary school building expansion, which involved partial demolition, refurbishment, relocation of portables, external works, and an extension to accommodate new teaching spaces, breakout zones, and specialist food technology and materials technology areas.

Completed in multiple stages, the project was carefully managed to keep adjacent classrooms and play areas safe and operational throughout construction.

Working in collaboration with Co.Op Studio, the design and installation of materials, fixtures, and fittings were thoughtfully considered to modernise the school. Natural blackbutt timber features prominently on the façade, complemented by a new playspace and sensory outdoor areas. These spaces include perforated metal screens, curved timber benches, and a mix of soft and hard landscaping – creating an environment that supports inclusive education and enhanced learning opportunities.
