News & Press — Wyndham Cultural Centre: A Seamless Fusion of Past, Present and Possibility
Alchemy proudly delivers a future-focused refurbishment for Werribee’s creative heart.
When it comes to refurbishment, the most meaningful transformations often go unnoticed. And that’s exactly the point.
We’re proud to have delivered the $7.4 million refurbishment of Wyndham Cultural Centre – a project defined by subtlety, precision and care.
The works included a transformed foyer with a new box office, refreshed gallery and bar areas, a new visual art collection space, and upgraded staff amenities. Behind the scenes, we improved functionality with a new library entry, repaired theatre seating, and roof and HVAC upgrades.
Where the old ends and the new begins? You’d never know.
This wasn’t about starting from scratch. It was about working with what was already there, integrating original materials and surfaces so seamlessly that the transition is invisible to the public eye. But to us, that craftsmanship is everything.
Thoughtful design, led by people
The Centre is a creative and community hub, so every decision was made with its users in mind – artists, staff, visitors and locals alike.
We introduced a highly tailored lighting design across the gallery, foyer and bar, with addressable lighting tracks controlled via phone. This gives the team full flexibility to shift mood, tone and visibility based on time of day or exhibition needs.
Designing with flexibility, building with care
As a design and construct project, we worked closely with Wyndham City to adapt and respond to challenges along the way. When we uncovered structural elements post-demolition, we saw opportunity – like repurposing a brick wall into a gallery threshold that now adds character and extra hanging space.
The updated gallery supports multiple display modes, including ceiling and wall mounts and an integrated hanging track system. Digital screens and focused lighting extend the exhibition experience into the foyer and bar.
Raising the roof and the standards
With parts of the building dating back to the 1960s and 1990s, modernisation was essential. We refurbished the roof, added a new safety access system, and ensured all upgrades met current codes.
Sustainability was also key, with:
Solar panel upgrades to reduce grid reliance
A smart building management system for fault reporting, energy use and system efficiency
These improvements will help the Centre reduce its environmental footprint for years to come.
