Meet Our Team — Where Passion Meets the Day Job

Behind every successful build is an estimating team that genuinely cares about the outcome. For Bjon, being an Estimator at Alchemy Construct is about more than numbers; it’s about being part of something bigger. Whether it’s collaborating with the team or seeing a project take shape, his enthusiasm for the job is clear. We spoke with Bjon about what makes the role so rewarding.

What do you love about the job?

This job gives me the opportunity to be exposed to new challenges, innovations and building designs on every project we tender. No two tenders are the same, so there’s always something new to learn. It’s a constant chance to expand my knowledge across construction, design, and costing.

What makes a really good day in your role?

Hearing that we’ve been successful on a tender, awarded the contract or named the preferred builder. It makes all the hard work and late nights worth it and fuels the fire to go after the next win.

People think estimating is stressful- what do they get wrong?

It can be fast-paced, but it’s not just pressure — it’s an opportunity to build long-lasting relationships and continually develop your problem-solving skills. People often don’t see the strategic and creative side of estimating. It’s about finding smart solutions, building strong relationships with subcontractors to support your bid, and working collaboratively to craft a compelling story for the client.

What’s something that’s gone right recently?

Recently, we secured two tender interviews on projects we’d just submitted. It’s a great step forward and brings us closer to hopefully winning the work. Moments like that really fuel the passion to keep pushing and land the next project.

What puts you in a good mood at work?

Seeing the end of a bid and all the hard work the team has put in over the weeks come together. From the programme to the methodology, and the support from our subcontractors, it all comes together into one cohesive submission. There’s nothing better than seeing that collective effort recognised — it creates a real buzz and sets the tone for the next opportunity.

When do you feel most satisfied in your role?

When you can see the strength of the relationships you’ve built really come into play. Whether it’s collaborating closely with the team, working through challenges with subcontractors, or having open, honest conversations with clients. It’s not just about the outcome, but the trust and respect built along the way that make the biggest difference and feels really rewarding when things like that occur.

How does the team make the job easier (or better)?

Everyone plays a key role in making the job both easier and more rewarding. From estimating through to our construction managers and site teams, each person brings valuable knowledge and a different perspective to the table. Their real-world experience provides fresh eyes on a project and often leads to solutions I wouldn’t have considered. That level of collaboration is what allows us to put together strong, well-rounded bids.

What’s different about working at Alchemy compared to other places?

For me, it’s the people and the culture that truly stand out. There’s a genuine sense of support and care across the entire business, without the weight of rigid hierarchy. It’s the kind of environment you want to be part of and can feel connected to a team that’s working toward a shared goal, rather than just being another cog in the machine.

How do you handle the busy days – what helps?

Staying organised is key. I prioritise tasks and work through them methodically to ensure nothing gets missed. Equally important is building in time to reset at the end of the day. Stepping away and spending time with people who energise you helps prevent burnout and keeps you sharp.

What advice would you give someone thinking about getting into estimating?

It’s a fast-paced environment, but don’t let that intimidate you, let it motivate you. Stay open, take it all in, and give yourself the time to learn as you go. Building strong relationships with your team and subcontractors is just as important as ensuring every detail and scope is accurately captured. Every project brings something new, often in ways you don’t expect, and the learning adds up quickly. Before long, you’ll look back and realise just how much you’ve grown, and that’s a pretty great feeling.
