Meet Our Team — Emily’s Advice For Young Women Entering The Construction Industry

Helping to encourage more women to enter the construction industry is something that we hold dear to our hearts.

We are currently sitting at a quarter of our workforce being female, with a target of 50/50 by 2025.

‘Why?’ You may ask – not only does having a more equal gender split in the industry create a safer and more balanced environment for both men and women, it also brings in new ideas, fresh perspectives and new ways of operating.

Companies with a healthy gender balance perform better in every measurable; increased efficiency, productivity, innovation, creativity and improved employee engagement.

We recently had a chat with Project Coordinator, Emily to learn more about her perspective as an accomplished woman in construction.

We also asked about her building of impact and needless to say, we’re pretty chuffed with her response!

What is your building of impact?
My first project with Alchemy was a Lifestyles Community Clubhouse, it was so rewarding to be able to see the residents coming together to enjoy the facilities and create new friendships.

“I love watching every day small tasks turn into something real and tangible.”

What is the one piece of advice you wish you had received in your early days of construction?
Be confident in yourself and your abilities and when you’re not, don’t be afraid to ask! You’re not expected to be the expert in everything!

What has been the most memorable moment of your career in construction?
Every moment has been memorable, every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities, it’s hard to pick just one.

What advice would you give to young women entering the industry?
Ask questions! In an industry full of experienced people, the best thing you can do is learn from as many people as possible. Listening and learning from others helped me to figure out my own perspective and approach to different tasks.

What’s the best bit about your job?
Being able to push and challenge myself every day.

What makes you proud to work in the construction industry?
I love watching every day small tasks turn into something real and tangible. The thought that everything you do from the start of the project has an impact on the final result, whether it be administrative tasks or proposing changes, knowing that you have an impact on the final result is so satisfying.

What’s the best bit about being an Alchemist?
Getting to work with likeminded and energetic people. Every Alchemist is pushing to be their best every day and to help others to achieve the same.
