Meet Our Team — Leadership on Site: A Q&A with Construction Manager Paul Mrocki

From building world-class facilities to navigating projects through COVID, Construction Manager Paul Mrocki shares the lessons he’s learned about leadership, teamwork and building strong relationships in the construction industry.

At Alchemy Construct, great projects start with great people. Our Construction Manager Paul Mrocki has spent years delivering complex builds across Melbourne and beyond, working alongside clients, consultants and subcontractors to bring ambitious projects to life.

We recently sat down with Paul for a quick Q&A to talk about his career so far, the projects that have shaped him and what it really takes to build a high-performing team on site – there may also be a little insight into what kind of coffee order a Construction Manager chooses to keep him going throughout the day. Hint: it has to be strong of course!

Find out more about our Construction Manager, Paul, below.

What has been your favourite project to date (doesn’t have to be an Alchemy project)?

Orygen and Orygen Youth Health in Parkville has been my favourite project. It was a privilege to help deliver a facility for globally recognised organisations leading the way in youth mental health research, treatment and clinical innovation.

What’s one value or mindset you always try to instil in your teams?

Being customer‑focused and making sure every client has a positive experience. When clients come back, it shows we’ve earned their trust and allows us to build long‑term partnerships, not just deliver projects.

What is the most critical lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

Relationships matter most in this industry. You will cross paths with the same people throughout your career, which is why treating everyone with respect is so important, the contractor you work with today could easily be your client tomorrow.

What’s the hardest project you’ve ever delivered, and what did it teach you about leadership under pressure?

Melbourne Sports Centres Parkville was by far the hardest project I’ve taken on. Delivering it through COVID was tough, but the team stuck together and really looked after each other. It reminded me how important it is to lean on your team when things get tough.

How do you maintain accountability across subcontractors without damaging relationships?

By setting clear expectations upfront, addressing issues early, and having honest, respectful conversations. When subcontractors know you’re fair and consistent, you can maintain accountability in a respectful way which results in stronger relationships.

How has your leadership style evolved over the course of your career?

My leadership style has evolved to be more balanced, empathetic, and open. I didn’t always feel comfortable asking for help, but I’ve realised that doing so builds trust, deepens relationships, and creates a team culture of collaboration and integrity.

What does a high-performing project team look like to you?

Everyone understands their role, shares the same goals, and works together to deliver. Team members hold each other accountable, trust one another and aren’t afraid to engage in conflict to resolve issues. There are no egos, the focus is on team success, and wins are celebrated as a team.

What is your advice to someone entering the construction industry?

Treat everyone with respect and take every opportunity to listen and learn. No matter their role, Construction Manager, Architect, or Tradesperson, everyone has something valuable to teach you.

How do you keep morale high during long, complex builds?

Team camaraderie. When a team genuinely supports each other and stays focused on a shared goal, morale stays strong even through long, complex builds.

What is your coffee order or go-to snack on site?

Strong oat latte, need to keep the caffeine levels high!
